Research and Development

Due to close cooperation with renowned research facilities as for example the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden and the Institute for Nano-architectures for Energy Conversion (Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin), the staff members of Spectruma Analytik keep always up-to-date with the latest techniques and developments in many areas of research like micro- and nanostructure fabrication or photovoltaics. The Glow Discharge Analyzers by Spectruma contribute significantly to the investigation and characterization of solid materials concerning elemental analysis and determination of layer thickness.

Participating regularly in diverse science fairs, user conferences and international projects, the staff members of Spectruma Analytik lively exchange experience and ideas with scientists of different research fields and other experts.

Currently, Glow Discharge Analyzers by Spectruma Analytik are applied in the international research project ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor). The aim of the project is the development of the world's largest tokamak, a magnetic fusion reactor. In preparatory experiments Hydrogen and Deuterium were heated up to 50 million degrees Celsius. At these temperatures, Hydrogen and Deuterium fully ionize and form a plasma. Materials and components which are directly exposed to plasma, like for example the divertor or the first wall of the reactor pressure vessel, must meet several requirements concerning stability and safety. So the interaction of the plasma with the surrounding walls was investigated using the Glow Discharge Analyzers GDA 650 HR and GDA 750 HR by Spectruma Analytik. The capability to detect Hydrogen, Deuterium and Tritium sensitively is one of the numerous advantages of the Analyzers by Spectruma Analytik.

Almost all other elements of the periodic table including Li, Na, C, N, P and O, can be determined with detection limits ranging from 0.1 to 10 ppm. Performing depth profile analyses, layer thicknesses between a few nanometers and several hundreds of micrometers are detectable. The relative depth resolution amounts to 5-10 % of the detected depth.

Compared to equally precise analytical instruments, the Glow Discharge Analyzers by Spectruma Analytik exhibit very short measuring periods of only some minutes. Moreover, no laborious and time-consuming sample preparation is required.

Due to their reliable analytical performance and the time-saving simple handling, the Glow Discharge Analyzers by Spectruma Analytik are indispensable laboratory instruments for every institution concerned with research on solid materials.
